So connecting analog wires directly from "rear left channel" to "rear left channel" would have higher quality, in theory. (I'm not an expert but first of all it sounds like a lower quality output?

You're right, I don't care about 4K (at least not for a few years ) Really? So it's not that expensive! And all the features you describe sound REALLY cool, I might just purchase one if this is the case. If you don't care about 4K (which it seems you don't), virtually anything off of craigslist or ebay with hdmi would do what you want it to you should be able to find something for less than $100.

Uh, yes, that's why they exist it sounds like you're just using your current one as an amp that also decodes DTS? Modern receivers are super fun: they have on screen displays (so not only can they pass through video, they can superimpose their own stuff on top of it), you can run tweaks on them from your cell phone using them as a remote control with customizable interfaces, Audyssey will let you set up a microphone to balance each speaker to your room environment, they can fetch content wirelessly from your computer, and turn a stereo signal from a movie into something that has height maps so helicopter noises come only from overhead speakers if you have them. By the way even if I buy an expensive receiver I think I still need the switch for video purposes, unless the new receivers know to pass through video to the TV as well?
